5 Dental Hazards to Watch Out for this Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving meal on table

The time for friends, family, and the ultimate feast is almost here! Thanksgiving allows a focus on everything to be grateful for, including your loved ones around you. But be real, everyone looks forward to this holiday for the indulgence! That said, it’s important not to completely give up on your oral health just because the gravy is flowing. Read on to learn how to protect your smile by avoiding these top 5 dental hazards on the big day.

#1. Sugar

Eating lots of sugar is one of the quickest ways to get a cavity! You may see sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, carrot souffle, sugary drinks, pies, and other sweet items on the Thanksgiving table. However, it’s in your best interest to limit your consumption of these treats. If you do indulge, just make sure you have some water handy to wash it all down and brush your teeth afterward.

#2. Wine

When it’s the holiday, it’s all about smiling. However, your beautiful, white teeth are at risk of getting stained if you’re not careful. Red wine and non-alcoholic juice beverages can easily cause stains and discoloration if you’re not careful. Dentists recommend limiting your drinks, however you can also keep water nearby to wash away liquids that are rich in color, protecting your smile in the process.

#3. Hard or Sharp Foods

Sweet foods can lead to discreet damage, but don’t forget about hard or sharp items that can cause immediate pain. Chips, nuts, candies, popcorn, and more can easily get stuck in between teeth and gums, plus they can damage your braces or dentures if you’re not careful.

#4. Sticky Foods

Candied pecans, caramel, marshmallows, and other sticky foods are risky for your dental health because they stay in contact with your teeth for long periods of time. This lets the bacteria in your mouth mingle with the sugar you eat to create acids that damage and decay.

#5. Grazing

It’s not just about what you eat that impact your oral health – when you eat it also matters. Thanksgiving always offers days’ worth of foods that lead to continuous consumption. Your mouth needs a break to allow your saliva to wash away food debris and clean your smile. Without breaks in between meals, you’re at risk of plaque buildup!

Don’t let dental troubles get in the way of a fun and delicious feast! Just watch out for these risks so you can protect your smile while enjoying all the holiday has to offer.
