All of a sudden, Thanksgiving is right around the corner! You’ve probably been looking forward to time with family, relaxing, and of course, the food. However, if you have dentures, you may be worried about getting through a meal without your smile slipping, sliding, or feeling uncomfortable. That’s why your dentist in Syracuse has included some easy yet effective tips to help you enjoy Thanksgiving with your dentures.

Avoid Loads of Sugar

It’s hard to skip sugar entirely, but you should especially watch out for sticky sweets like cranberry sauce, candied yams, and sodas. These items not only put natural teeth at risk, but they can get stuck on your dentures. If you simply must indulge in your favorite slice of pie, drink lots of water throughout your meal to help wash it down.

Cut & Chew Thoroughly

Your dentures can only stay put if you eat properly, which is why you should try not to take big bites at the dinner table. This can help you avoid slipping and sliding dentures, and it also makes chewing easier. If you can cut meat or veggies into small, even pieces, you’re eating experience will be much more comfortable. Plus, chewing evenly on both sides of your dentures allows them to last longer.

Stick to Softer Foods

Along with how you eat, it’s a good idea to watch what you consume. Thanksgiving often brings items that are difficult to chew like raw fruits, steaks, corn on the cob, and more. Incredibly hard or tough foods should be avoided to prevent a malfunction during the feast. Instead, try to opt for slow-roasted meats, cooked veggies, and other soft foods.

Don’t Forget About Your Oral Health

The holidays can be downright distracting, but now is not the time to slack on your oral health routine. Make sure that you’re taking your dentures out each night to soak in solution. It’s also vital that you clean your prosthesis everyday to prevent food debris and plaque from building up on your artificial smile. Remember to brush your gums and tongue to avoid infection. Last but certainly not least, schedule an appointment with your dentist before the year is over to prevent and detect any issues before they become serious.

Now that you know how to enjoy thanksgiving with your dentures, use these tips to take advantage of the festivities without putting your smile at risk!
