How NOT Embarrassing! Why Getting Dental Implants Isn’t Humiliating

As a human being, you probably avoid embarrassing situations as much as you can. Exposing a vulnerability creates fear or rejection, judgment, or mockery. As a person who has lost one or more teeth, you may feel self-conscious about your smile and actively avoid showing it. The idea of going to a dentist to talk about dental implants may feel more embarrassing than simply hiding. However, getting dental implants should not be a humiliating situation at all! Here are a few reasons why.

Tooth Loss Is More Common Than You Think.

Although you don’t often hear others talking about it, missing teeth affects more people than you may know. In fact, about 178 million Americans have lost at least one tooth in their lifetime, and up to 30 percent of seniors have no natural teeth left in their smile at all! In other words, you’re not the only one who has struggled with preserving real teeth, and you don’t have to feel shame for needing to replace them.

Your Dentist Doesn’t Judge You.

Perhaps for you, dental visits are not regular or frequent. For your dentist, they work with dental issues every single day. Although they certainly can develop a relationship with you individually, they have seen all kinds of problems in tons of people and don’t think badly of you because of the current state of your mouth. They care more about helping you regain confidence and function; after all, they went to dental school to learn how to treat a litany of issues!

Living Without a Complete Smile Is Difficult.

The alternatives to not getting your teeth replaced with dental implants are coping without all your teeth or having a slightly inferior option. Eating anything other than soft foods can not only be challenging but painful if you don’t have strong teeth or properly fitted restorations. However, with dental implants, you can have up to 75 percent of your original biting power. Plus, implants usually last for decades with minimal maintenance and keep the jawbone strong; meanwhile, dentures and bridges have to have frequent adjustments and replacements. These benefits outweigh by far any short-lived embarrassment at having to admit to your dentist that you are missing one or more teeth.

At some point, you will likely face an embarrassing situation, but getting dental implants doesn’t have to be one of them. Working with your dentist will ensure that you have a full set of functional teeth, are able to smile and eat with confidence, and have a higher quality for a lifetime. Don’t give up something you truly want for the long term for a moment of embarrassment. Talk to your dentist about implants today!
